THE DROWSY CHAPERONE AT STAGE DOOR THEATRE

The Drowsy Chaperone is one of my favorite musicals and I happened to see a production of this delightful musical last week at the Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. As I mentioned earlier on the MAZ Arts Blog, this production was as good, if not better, than the National Tour of the show that I saw a couple of years ago. Fans of the show should run to see this production and those who have never seen The Drowsy Chaperone should take advantage of this opportunity to see a wonderful production of this Tony Award-winning musical. The Drowsy Chaperone is an homage to the great classic musicals of the 20s and the effect those musicals had on their fans. The show opens with a man in a chair (the narrator) who shares his love of this show with the audience. As he plays the record (yes, record), the show comes alive in his apartment. The Drowsy Chaperone is filled with many of the typical musical comedy characters of that era and some wacky characters essential to the plot including the showgirl, her handsome fiance, the producer, gangsters, the heroine, a bumbling Latin Lothario, an unflappable English butler, an absent-minded dowager, a ditzy chorine, a harried best man, and the bride-to-be's champagne guzzling “drowsy” chaperone. It's a fast-paced musical filled with mistaken identity, wacky situations, delightful musical numbers and a gay wedding. The Drowsy Chaperone runs through July 25 at the Stage Door Theatre, 8036 Sample Road in Coral Springs. For more information call 954.344.7765 or visit www.stagedoortheatre.com.
